Wizard, Import/Export and more responsive options

View this email in your browser
Advanced Ads is not resting. Some more popular feature requests were solved with the last updates and creating an ad became much faster with the new Wizard.

This email contains information about the following changes:
  • Quicker ad creation with the Wizard
  • Import / Export of ads and options
  • Ads with a category display condition show up only on matching page types
  • Choose responsive AdSense format from vertical, horizontal or rectangle
  • Force image ads to be responsive if not supported by your theme
  • Target tablet devices
  • Fixing an add-on update error
  • Fixing some user permissions

Wizard

When you create your next ad, you will meet the Wizard. This is a simplified workflow which allows you to quickly set up an ad with basic settings.

You will see the Wizard next time you create or work on an ad, but can close it for the future.

Import / Export

You can now export your ads, groups, placements and options in order to import them on another page. The link to the page can be found at the bottom of the settings page.

Ads with Term Display Conditions

If you are using Display Conditions for any kind of terms, e.g. tags or categories and their archive pages, you should be aware of a change made in their behavior.

When you have set up the ad to show only on posts with a specific term or on archive pages of a specific term, the ad will not show anymore on other page types (e.g. home page). This was expected by most users and caused confusion to others. Please let me know if you run into any issues with this change.

Responsive Optimizations

With the update of the Responsive add-on there are a couple of optimizations:
  • You can now specific the format for responsive AdSense units to be vertical, horizontal or rectangle.
  • Image ads can be forced to be responsive if this is not automatically supported by your responsive theme.
  • You can target tablet devices specifically.

Add-On Updates

I made some changes in the plugin store which now allows you to remove sites from licenses even after you don't have access to them anymore. This change caused old activations to not work anymore.

It should be fixed automatically with the update of Advanced Ads to 1.7.4, but if you still get an "Unauthorized" error when trying to update an add-on, you can just disable and enable the license key to fix it once and for all.

Fixing User Permissions

The user permissions setting introduced recently caused some publishers to not have access to their ads anymore, while they were still working in the frontend. In case you update from a version prior to 1.7.2, this is now fixed automatically. If you are already on 1.7.2 or later, you can just disable and enable Advanced Ads again to fix it.

As always, let me know if you have any issue with the update or the new features simply by replying to this email.

[Security Advisory] Stored XSS in JetPack

Real People. Real Security.

Security Advisory: Stored XSS in JetPack

We are reaching out to you today to alert you to a vulnerability that has the potential to impact websites utilizing the JetPack plugin. We feel it is our responsibility to keep our community informed and, as always, we are happy to answer your questions.

During regular research audits of the Sucuri Firewall (Cloud-based WAF),we discovered a stored XSS vulnerability affecting the WordPress Jetpack plugin, currently installed on more than a million active sites.

Security Risk: Medium

Exploitation Level: Easy/Remote

DREAD Score: 6/10

Vulnerability: Stored XSS

Patched Version: 4.0.3

The security bug is located in the Shortcode Embeds Jetpack module, so if you don't have it activated on your site you're not affected by this issue. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by leaving a comment containing a carefully positioned shortcode to inject malicious Javascript code on the vulnerable website.

As it is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability, it could allow an attacker to hijack administrator accounts, inject SEO spam to the affected page, and redirect visitors to malicious websites.
