One of the most popular features in Advanced Ads Pro is the cache-busting, which enables you to deliver dynamic ads on cached websites. The only issue with this feature was the extra weight on performance. I am very happy to announce that with the new passive cache-busting option, we found a cure for this.
The advantages of Passive Cache-Busting
With all ads already being in the source code, there is no delay when loading your ads anymore.
Passive cache-busting does have some limitations with very complex ad codes and a few visitor conditions. You can find more information about that and on how to set it up in the manual.
Combining multiple Display Conditions
One of the limitations for Display Conditions was to not be able to combine them in all imaginable ways. The new version of Advanced Ads has this feature now. See some examples on the manual page.
When you run larger sites with many authors and editors, you might want to disable PHP from the plain text ads. This is now possible by setting the constant ADVANCED_ADS_DISALLOW_PHP in your wp-config.php file.
Do you have a question regarding any of these changes or an issue you would like me to take care of? Please don't hesitate to reply to this email.
One of the features that caused confusion since the beginning are the Display Conditions. They control on which pages ads can appear when injected automatically and where not.
My main focus with Advanced Ads 1.7 will be on usability. So it made sense that I start this new release cycle with a rewrite of the Display Conditions interface. It now works like the interface for the Visitor Conditions.
Optimized Display Conditions
This means that you'll only add rules for things that actually matter to your setup instead of seeing all the confusing options that are not necessary.
Here is an example for 3 activated post categories.
Please check your Display Conditions after the update
The new Display Conditions are stored slightly different from the previous ones. The data update automatically happens after the plugin update. However, I would like to ask you to check if everything works as expected afterwards.
I push this update on a Monday so that I have a whole week to help you in case of any misunderstandings or bugs. If you find something, please don't hesitate to reply to this email.
Show ads by Author
Many users asked me how they could share ad revenue with authors by adding the author's own ads to the ad rotation.
With the new Author Display Condition, this is now possible. Just follow this tutorial.
Advanced Ads 1.7 is close with some larger changes to the Display Conditions. I wanted to be smart and only new users should test it before everyone sees the update so I published it already on wordpress.org under the previous version number 184.108.40.206.
Unfortunately, the Wordfence security plugin now believes that this might be a security issue and gives a warning. You can either ignore it or download the current plugin files from wordpress.org to get the new version already.
If you don't get the warning and are still curious about the changes, you can also just download and try it. The official release and update mail will be send out next week.
