More tracking options

View this email in your browser
During the last weeks, a couple of game-changing features were added to the Tracking add-on:
  • public ad stats for advertisers
  • email reports
  • comparing ad stats

Public stats for advertisers

You can now easily share the stats of an ad with anyone, using a dedicated public link. Advertisers prefer to get stats this way, because they don't need to remember a login.

You can find the link in the "Stats" meta box on the ad edit page.

Email Reports

Just a few minutes ago, email reports were added with the latest update of the add-on.

They allow you to send summed reports on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis including the performance of your ads during the last 30 days, month, or 12 months.

If you need email reports with different options, please leave a feature request.

Comparing ad stats

The stats page in the dashboard was also completely reviewed in one of the last releases. It now allows you to display and compare stats for only one or multiple ads.

There are a few more optimizations I have in mind for the Tracking add-on.

Just reply to this email if you have additional questions or ideas.

Thanks

Which capabilities do you need in Advanced Ads?

View this email in your browser
With the just released Advanced Ads 1.6.14 I added an option that allows you to put editors in charge of your ads.

If you enable this option, editors can create, edit and publish ads – just like with posts. They can still not change the plugin options though.

If you feel that you need more options to allow / disallow specific features for specific users or user roles, then please comment below this post.

Shortcut icon to quickly add an ad to content

Since version 1.6.11 you can use a shortcut icon in the editor to quickly place the shortcode of an ad, group or placement in the text.

Responsive images

WordPress 4.4 is going to be released tomorrow. It supports responsive images in the content, which means that it loads a technical smaller image on smaller devices and therefore can save a lot of bandwidth.

Advanced Ads supports this out of the box for image and rich media ads. Learn more from this post.

Disabled AdSense on 404 pages

To help you comply with their terms, AdSense ads are now disabled on 404 error pages by default.

These are just the main new feature from the last releases of Advanced Ads. There is more to come soon.

My present for 100.000 downloads

View this email in your browser
In the last week, Advanced Ads was downloaded for the 100.000th time. It took less than 1 1/2 years, so I am very proud. Right now is also the season where most money is spend on advertising – this means most money earned by publishers like you. So in this newsletter I wanted to thank you with 3 tips that helped me to generate more money through this season and beyond.

3 premium tips to increase ad revenue

I normally start optimizing my ad setup in September.
Here are three tips that helped me to optimize my income from ad networks in the past. In short:
  1. (how to) display more ads to new users only
  2. try new ad networks – and let me help a bit
  3. optimize ad sizes

1. display more ads to new users only

Especially if you generate money from clicks on ads, then you have to try this RIGHT NOW.

Click rates are much higher from new users than from returning visitors. Especially if you have a larger amount of people just coming from Google and leaving right away, then you should consider to display more or better placed ads to them.

This is one code I am using to display an ad to new visitors only.
<script> if(!localStorage.getItem('was_already_here')) { document.write('YOUR-AD-CODE'); localStorage.setItem('was_already_here', true); } </script>
It checks if a variable was set in the user's browser. If not – because he wasn't here yet – the ad is displayed and the variable is set.

If you are not familiar with JavaScript then you can check out the new visitors condition in Pro.

2. try new ad networks

From testing dozens of ad networks per year I know that there are some that can outperform the ones you are using right now.

Tests take time and I must honestly say that most ad networks don't result in an increase of income.

The good news is that I might be able to save you some time with this.

I can help 5 of you to get started with a good performing in-image ad network.

The condition to apply is that you have a site which makes use of large images and has more than 1 Million impressions per month.

I know that not everyone of you fits into this, but I promise to find more time for similar offers in the future.

How to apply? Just reply to this email with the URL and monthly impressions of your site.

I am going to select the 5 winners on Friday and personally help with the implementation, if you want me to. This is why I have to limit it.

3. optimize ad sizes

If you run different ad sizes then check which ones work best.

I know how convenient it is to only use a Medium Rectangle, because it can be served on mobile and desktop without breaking the layout.

However, a Leaderboard might also fit on larger devices and pays a bit more.

Also a Large Rectangle (336x280) performs sometimes better than a Medium Rectangle (300x250).

Or if you have a Medium Rectangle in your sidebar you can try a Large Skyscraper (300x600) without changing much in the layout.

With most ad networks it doesn't take long to change the size of an ad. Imagine that it might take you just 5 minutes, but you would earn an extra $5 each month. Would it be worth your time?

One possibility to test and display different ad sizes is the Responsive add-on.

If you read through this email then you are really interested in optimizing your ads and I am sure that at least one of these tips will result in better yields.

I would really appreciate if you let me know what works and how good. I intend to gather more tips in future issues of this newsletter and therefore value any feedback.

Thanks
Thomas

Layer ads makeover

View this email in your browser
This newsletter is dedicated to the PopUp & Layer add-on, which can increase user interaction using a closable layer format. This placement is not only useful for ads, but also signup forms, promotions, or other content that needs user attention.

This add-on is one of the first I created after many users asked me for such a feature and it is still very popular. This is the reason why I completely rewrote it in the current version.

Split testing your PopUps

Since version 1.3. the PopUp and Layer add-on is a placement and not an option of an ad. This allows you to rotate multiple "ads" in the same placement. The change is not only logical, but also enables a few interesting situations like testing the performance of different content in the PopUp against each other.

Convert better from leaving visitors

Another feature allows you to trigger the PopUp when users want to leave your site. You probably know this behavior from some subscription plugins already. Now you can use this in Advanced Ads to boost anything with people who leave anyway.

Nice Fancybox

The original version of the PopUp was hand coded to not interfere with other code. With the new version the plugin allows you to choose the nice looking Fancybox script. It is not a default option because it might break when you already use another instance of Fancybox on your site, but if you don't you should definitely check it out.

Choose the position of the PopUp

The previous version only allowed you a centered box. Now you can also choose whether the PopUp should appear at the top, bottom, or other positions on your site.

The rest of the options are pretty much the same. You can choose between different triggers for the PopUp to appear and add a close button with a timeout, so that visitors who close it don't see it for some time. I am thinking about using this instead of a much higher priced subscription plugin that I am using on another site now.

Will older versions break?

If you already have PopUPs set up with the previous settings then you don't have to worry. The old script is still working. It would still make sense to switch, because I am not going to support the old method from now on.

Open Feature Requests

With the changes from above I am almost through with the todo list. There are two items that I put on the Feature Requests page to see if anyone is interested in them at all:
  • trigger: display ads after x seconds
  • option: display ad only x times per user or visit

I am sure that after reading this post you have a lot of ideas on how to use this add-on. Don't let me hold you back from getting it here or update if you already use it.
